Are Aluminum Grinders Safe?

Don’t be tricked by this myth.

There is a video online about the best grinders that states that aluminum grinders are unsafe. That video is false and, in fact, a cleverly disguised advertisement. The video will not be imbedded to from here because doing so would promote it on the YouTube and Google search results. If you have seen the video, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, don’t worry, there’s nothing to be concerned about and you can skip this article.

The video states that aluminum grinders can contain metal shavings or drop metal shavings into your herb. The video also states that smoking aluminum shavings is dangerous to your health. Here is where the video lies.

Aluminum Grinders are Safe

No lighter will be hot enough to vaporize aluminum. Myth busted.

The melting point of aluminum is 1220 °F (660.32 °C) and the boiling point — the point where aluminum becomes a vapor — is 4566 °F (2519 °C). Because of the high vapor point of aluminum, no regular lighter will allow aluminum shavings in your herb to be inhaled.

In addition to that, it is very rare for an aluminum grinder to leave metal shavings. You might find some metal shavings in your aluminum grinder once you first receive your grinder but a quick wash will remove the shavings.

Aluminum is a soft metal but much denser than any herb or stem. Think about it for a second, do you worry about the metal that might come off of a knife when you are eating your food? The metal in knives do come off but it is a tiny amount and harmless.

You can rest easily knowing that aluminum grinders are great grinders for the money.

Acrylic Grinders are Dangerous

Acrylics are known for their ease of use, colors, and transparency. Their not good in grinders however.

The video was accurate about the dangers of acrylic grinders. Unlike aluminum, acrylic will release harmful toxins if heated with a lighter. Acrylic’s melting point is 212°F (100°C) which is not very high. A lighter can produce 3590 °F (1,977 °C). Also, because acrylic grinders are not very durable, you can easily find pieces of acrylic in your herb. For this reason, acrylic grinders are highly not recommended. Spend a few buck more and get a best grinder.

Conclusion

The video that states that aluminum grinders are safe is a promotional video. It creates fear in the video and directs them toward a product that was stated to relieve the fear. However, this is just a clever marketing trick: the fear is only perceived and not real.

By knowing the truth, you can save yourself the trouble of buying a no name grinder from a manufacturer that lies. I hope this article served you well.

    Aluminum releases toxins when heated. Look up the dangers of aluminum cookware. Proven harmful and cookware is not usually heated past 500 f. You are mistaken

    In response to those doubting the safety of anodized aluminum…this is from the study that the other two commentators are referencing;

    “Clemson University Extension’s Home and Garden Information Center tested different cookware types, and found anodized aluminum cookware to be safe.”
